An Indian student on an F-1 visa in the US is facing serious delays in getting an SSN due to an FNU Error. The issue began because the passport has no surname, which is creating system conflicts and blocking verification.
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services issued the visa using the placeholder FNU, meaning Full Name Unknown. This has now pushed the student’s SSN application into Level 3 SAVE verification, causing long processing delays.
What the FNU Error Means for SSN Processing
The SAVE system could not automatically verify the student’s details due to the FNU Error. When this happens, manual checks are required, which often slows down SSN approvals significantly.
Experts say such cases are common for Indian students with single names. The Social Security Administration often struggles to process records where naming formats do not align across documents.
Which Name Document Matters Most
Experts point out that the name on the I-20 enrolment form is legally binding for SSN purposes. SSA clerks should not rely on the visa foil to enter names during processing.
Instead, the name must match the I-94 proof of entry document. In FNU cases, the single name is treated as the surname, while the first name field remains blank.
Documents You Must Carry to SSA
To resolve the FNU Error, you must visit the SSA office in person. Carry your on-campus job offer letter or OPT authorisation as proof of eligibility.
You also need copies of your passport, I-20, and I-94 forms. All records must align exactly to avoid further delays.
Why This Issue Cannot Be Ignored
This verification process is currently the only way to fix the mismatch and release the SSN card. Matching the I-94 and I-20 records is essential for approval.
