Tech giant Google has shared positive news for its employees on H1-B visas. The company informed staff that it will begin green card sponsorship starting next year, offering relief to many who have been waiting for progress on permanent residency.
As per media reports, Google circulated an internal newsletter explaining the move. Eligible employees will see faster processing of PERM. The note added that those meeting PERM standards can expect contact from immigration authorities in the first quarter of 2026.
PERM, or programme electronic review management, is a key step in the green card process. Tech companies support employees through this route to permanent residency. Once PERM approval is secured, employees can proceed with formal green card applications.
In 2023, Google laid off nearly 12,000 employees and paused PERM processing. Amazon and Meta also took similar steps during that period. The renewed push marks a shift in approach as hiring and stability improve.
From 2026 onward, Google plans to accelerate PERM cases and green card sponsorship for eligible staff. This decision is expected to reduce uncertainty for many H1-B holders working at the company.
The process will still involve strict conditions. Apart from educational qualifications, work efficiency will be evaluated. Google also stated that remote employees must report to office locations to meet eligibility requirements.
Seniority and performance will continue to play an important role in approvals. These details were outlined clearly in Google’s internal memo, setting expectations for employees preparing to apply.
