Green Card Holder Detained in US

Imagine living in the US legally for 34 years and suddenly being denied entry back home. Not only that but also being subjected to inhumane treatment for making a human error.

This was the reality for an immigrant who lost their Green Card on their return trip to the US. To get a replacement, they paid $575 and were made to wait for 10 days.

Each day they spent over $1,000 on accommodation which they had to cut out of their mortgage payment. Apart from the financial toll, what is more shocking is the US authorities didn’t even offer any support.

Their daughter, who is suffering from scoliosis, was denied medication and her brace was off at a crucial time. She shared her ordeal on social media, writing, “No financial support or help (daughter is US citizen) 34 years legally in the USA. TSA precheck already completed. Zero priority with minor child.”

Many users agreed the system is broken. Some pointed out that even US citizens who lose their passports abroad must wait, but a lost Green Card is an even bigger hassle.

Others were more hard and slammed the requirement for a physical card. Border agents already use facial recognition, so why is this outdated rule still in place?

This incident proves that not just immigrant visa holders but even Green Card holders are not safe. Staying in a country for over three decades, you would assume the authorities would have some data that they could verify.

At the same time, Indians who are planning to travel should always check their visa, passport, Green card, and other documents. With the hard crackdown underway, officials will not miss any chance to detain immigrants.
