Amid mass H-1B appointment cancellations in India, many applicants are being forced to find alternative routes. For some, Dubai is emerging as a practical backup, but only for those with valid UAE residency.
Chennai Appointment Suddenly Delayed
One applicant had an H-1B appointment scheduled in Chennai for December 18. After the US announced social media vetting for H-1B visas, the appointment was suddenly pushed to April 30 without prior notice.
Delay Not Feasible for US Career
The four month delay was not viable for the applicant’s US job plans. Since he has been a resident of the United Arab Emirates since 2016, he chose to move his visa interview to Dubai.
Struggle With Indian Consulate
The most difficult part was cancelling the Chennai appointment. The applicant said it took eight days of repeated calls to the Indian visa help desk. Only then was the profile successfully transferred to the UAE.
Faster Processing in Dubai
Once Dubai handled the case, the process moved quickly. The new visa fee was paid on January 7. An interview slot was secured for January 13 without further delays.
Same Day Biometrics and Interview
At the Dubai consulate, biometrics and the visa interview were completed on the same day. The applicant described the visa officer as friendly. The interview itself went smoothly.
221(g) Issued for Social Media Checks
The officer flagged new social media verification requirements. A 221(g) slip was issued for administrative processing. The applicant’s passport was retained while public online profiles were reviewed.
Status Changes From Refused to Approved
The case moved faster than expected. The online status briefly showed “Refused” before changing to “Approved” within three hours. The applicant confirmed the approval soon after.
Dubai Emerging as Backup Option
Dubai is now becoming popular among Indian H-1B aspirants with UAE residency. Some are even renewing expired UAE residency to access faster processing. No confirmed cases exist of Indian citizens getting H-1B interviews abroad without residency.
Delays Leave Applicants With No Choice
Applicants switching locations are doing so out of necessity, not convenience. Prolonged delays in India are forcing professionals to explore every available option to keep their US careers on track.
