Indian Shopkeeper’s U.S. Struggle

Indian Shopkeeper's U.S. Struggle

Rakesh “Rocky” Patel of Indian origin, owner of City Foods in downtown Cleveland, has invested heavily in safeguarding his store against frequent robberies.

Despite implementing security measures like cameras and door locks, Patel believes the same two or three thieves are targeting his establishment. Surveillance videos depict their audacious acts, from grabbing alcohol to physically assaulting employees.

The recurring thefts have prompted Patel to reorganize his store, placing expensive items out of easy reach and creating barriers with stacked soda crates. However, these efforts haven’t sufficed in deterring the criminals, who display increasing boldness.

Having been in business since 2018, Patel faces financial challenges in sustaining the security enhancements. He contemplates hiring a security guard or off-duty police officer but fears the prohibitive costs that could jeopardize his business viability.

Regular customer Kelvin Boyd suggests a security guard, emphasizing the limitations Patel faces in managing the situation alone. While police reports indicate active investigations and heightened attention to the area, Patel advocates for increased nighttime police patrols to ensure the safety of his employees.

Despite the adversity, Patel remains committed to his store, working diligently to support his family and contribute to his son’s education.
