Rajinder Kumar Indian truck driver

Rajinder Kumar, a 32-year-old Indian truck driver, has been transferred from federal immigration custody to Oregon to face prosecution over a crash that killed a newlywed couple. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the transfer in an October 15 statement.

Kumar faces two counts of first-degree manslaughter and three counts of recklessly endangering another person in Deschutes County. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is scheduled for January 2027, according to KTVZ.

The case stems from a November 24, 2025, crash on Highway 20 east of Bend. William Carter and Jennifer Lower Carter died when their car struck a tractor-trailer that had jackknifed across the road, according to local reporting.

ICE said it lodged an immigration detainer asking the county jail to hold Kumar for federal authorities upon release. According to the agency, the county released him in April 2026 without honoring the request. KTVZ reported that he was released on bail with a GPS ankle monitor.

Federal officers arrested Kumar on April 22, according to ICE. The agency says he entered the United States illegally in 2022. ICE said it will pursue his immigration case after the state criminal proceedings conclude.
