It is a known fact in politics that you can’t trust a politician’s word. There’s always an ulterior motive behind whatever they say and by excellent convincing skills, can prove you wrong for quoting their own words. The campaign for the upcoming US elections demonstrates this ability of the politicians perfectly. Nikki Haley finished third at the Iowa caucus and when asked about the reasons why the republicans are not liking her, she made a U-turn on a statement she earlier made.
The host of a show accused the Republican party of being ‘anti-immigrant’ and Nikki Haley denied the allegations. She further went on to say that America has been a ‘racist country’. Her statement is a direct contradiction of her claims of being racially bullied as a child.
In an earlier interview, Haley said that she herself faced racism in the US teaching to ascertain her Indian identity. It is clear that she is willing to play the racism card as and when needed in order to receive support from the voters.
The claim that America has never been a racist country seems absurd but it is nothing more than an attempt to appease the traditional white republican voters who have denied the existence of racism for long.
The politics of opportunity and appeasement may seem lucrative but in the age of social media, it is not easy to get away with such tricks.
