An Indian Data Engineer left his job of 3 years, hoping to build a better life in the US. After completing his master’s in 2022, he quickly realized the path wasn’t as easy as he imagined. With his OPT (Optional Practical Training) work permit about to expire, he’s still without a job.
The techie turned to social media to share his struggles. After a year of trying, all he’s received are rejections. He’s sent out resumes, asked for referrals, and even had interviews – only to be blocked by the same dreaded sponsorship question.

This is the harsh reality for many international students, especially Indians, who come to America with big dreams. Now, with just two months left on his permit, the techie is struggling to keep hope alive.
“It feels like being on OPT/STEM is a crime at this point,” the student wrote online. Other graduates echoed his frustration, with one sharing that they managed to land a job just five days before their OPT expired.

But let’s be real: relying on last-minute miracles isn’t the answer. Don’t leave a stable job behind for the uncertainty of chasing the American Dream. It could easily turn into the American Nightmare.
