An Indian origin lawyer in Singapore is going to face jail time after being suspended from practicing following numerous contempt cases. A court in Singapore sentenced Ravi Madaswamy, a 54 year old lawyer to 21 days of jail for incidents that took place in 2021. Ravi had been suspended for five years because of his behavior in the courtroom.

Ravi had accused justices on two different counts of being biased against him. He accused justice Audrey Lim of being biased and also interrupted her during the proceedings. He had also accused judge Chay Yuen Fatt of bias in relation to his scheduling.

He was found to be guilty of 9 counts of contempt in March 2023. Ravi argued that he had been suffering from relapses of his bipolar disorder during the contempt. The court noted that the relapse didn’t affect his ability to exercise self control and hence held him responsible for it.

His non-compliance with the prescribed medication regime was also observed by the court. He has also been charged for disorderly behavior in public. He had slapped a woman publicly in a temple for which he was charged. These charges were later dropped and he was left with just a warning.
