An Indian man, Abhinav Kumar, was sentenced to 15 months in prison for sexually assaulting a passenger on a flight to Seattle.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington announced his conviction for abusive sexual contact after a three-day trial in May.

Abhinav Kumar, 39, was arrested at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on February 18 for groping the breast of a sleeping juvenile on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Seattle.
U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman highlighted that sexual assaults on aircraft are rising in the Western District of Washington, and they have a strict zero-tolerance policy for such behavior, emphasizing serious consequences for offenders.

The FBI, with help from the Port of Seattle Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection, investigated the case.
In court, Abhinav Kumar described the assault as a “constant, haunting presence” that has deeply affected him and made him fearful of strangers.

Prosecutors stressed the need for a strong deterrent against such crimes, arguing for a sentence that would send a clear message about the serious consequences of abusive sexual contact on aircraft.
