In a shocking report, it is established that as many as 403 Indian students died for various reasons including suicides, accidents, and others. This is between 2018-23 and the statistics are provided by the central government, in a written statement in the Rajya Sabha.
Another shocking revelation is that most of these fatalities have happened in Canada and not the US.
In the last 5 years, 403 Indian students died in 34 different countries. 91 students died in Canada alone while 48 died in the UK. 40 died in Russia and in the USA, which sees the highest inflow of students, 36 have died. Australia reported 35 deaths while Ukraine 21. Germany reported 20, Cyprus 14, and Philippians – 10.
Amidst the increased tensions between India and Canada, the fact that Canada has seen the highest deaths of students has caused a tense situation. There was a debate on the same at the Rajya Sabha and India vowed to take measures to restrict such instances in the future.
