A controversial poll on social media pitted Americans to choose between illegal Mexican immigrants and legal Indian immigrants, with the result leaving everyone in shock.
The poll got over 48,000 votes on X and a staggering 82% of them supported illegal Mexicans over the legally migrating Indians. It highlighted the blatant racism in the country, with many people even criticizing the user’s intention to put these two communities against each other.

Some went on to shamelessly defend the results, pointing to cultural ties with Mexico and stereotypes against Indian immigrants. “Mexicans have always been part of our community. Indians just take high-skilled jobs,” wrote one user.
This exposes the debate of immigration as more than just restricted legality. It is about prevalent prejudices in the society against a particular race or ethnicity.

This comes amidst the rising tensions over immigration at the US-Mexico border. Since 2021, over 10 million migrants have attempted entry, with Mexicans making up the largest group.
This debate is a grim reminder of how far the US still has to go in addressing this systemic racism. While Trump has promised to take strict actions against illegal immigration, he should also be vigilant about this growing hatred in the country.
