Many Democrats and their supporters feared that Trump’s return to power would lead to a more undemocratic and discriminatory climate in the US. Well, it seems their fears are slowly turning into reality.
Ajay Bhutoria, an Indian-American Democratic fundraiser and Kamala Harris supporter, has been receiving racist messages urging him to leave the country and “go back to India.” Social media users made various derogatory remarks against him, even calling him a “beggar in America.”
Bhutoria is the deputy finance chair for the Democratic National Committee and an advocate for immigrant communities. This recent incident shows that no one is safe from such racist attacks, no matter what their position is.
This follows Republicans constantly throwing racist remarks against the US Vice President during their campaign. One spokesperson even said that the White House would “smell like curry” if Kamala Harris won.
After Trump’s win, immigrant communities are afraid that they will become victims of more such attacks. Kamala Harris’ election at the White House would have helped in somewhat mitigating this divisive political climate but it seems it was not in the cards.
