The American press dictates to the world the ethics of journalism but it seems like when it comes to sensitization, the double standards that it follows paints a very different picture. A weekly news magazine in the US, Newsweek recently published an article which has caused an outrage on the internet because of its insulting description of Hindu deity.
The newly inaugurated Hanuman statue in Texas has been in the news because of an ongoing protest against it by conservative church groups. Reporting on this issue, the magazine described the statue of Hanuman as “Huge Half-Monkey Half-Human Statue”.
The reporting is not only ignorant but also outrageously insensitive. The statue installed in Texas is one of the biggest statues in the United States and hence it can’t be passed off as lazy journalism. A user at X asked how the Americans would have reacted if someone had described the statue of Jesus in such a derogatory manner.
This is the same media which finds almost everything as anti-semitic or anti-christian in the current political scenario. Although it seems like the same rules don’t apply to them when it comes to other religions. The US press has long lost any kind of credibility and hence expecting any better from them is not really reasonable.
