The Storyteller

Disney+Hotstar is gathering words of praise for its recent venture ‘The Storyteller’. The movie had been stuck in production for a long time and now that it is released on OTT fans are liking it very much.

The movie is an adaptation of Satyajit Ray’s ‘Tarinikhuro’ and has wonderful performances from Paresh Rawal and Adil Hussain. This is not the first time that Satyajit Ray’s short stories are made into OTT content. A few years back, Netflix brought its own anthology named ‘Ray’ which had had its share of criticism and appreciation.

‘Ray’ was an anthology and it had four segments directed by three different directors and it quite naturally polarised audiences. Bengali fans of Ray did not like the show very much and thought of it as a kind of blasphemy, darkening and sexualising Ray’s children’s narratives.

The Storyteller does not have to be accused of these follies and it seems a more faithful adaptation is liked by fans more than an experimental one. Abhishek Chaubey’s episode ‘Hungama Kyun Hai Barpa’ was the most close-to-text adaptation in the series and that is what people liked most.

In its effort to do experiments with the narrative, Netflix got beaten by Hotstar in the adaptation game and The Storyteller is now having a better response than Ray.
