Have you been relying completely on IMDb for your movie reviews? If IMDb is where you go to see if a movie is worth watching or not then you need to reconsider. Usually a rating higher than 8 on IMDb usually indicates that the movie is a must watch. But wouldn’t you be surprised if you find out that a Bollywood movie that is not great by any standard has a higher rating on IMDb than a film like Oppenheimer. The recently released movie Yaariyan 2 has an IMDb rating of 9.0.
Usually a new released movie has a slightly higher rating and it generally drops a little from there. But the rating that Yaariyan 2 has received is much higher even for a new movie. It has raised some questions around the validity of these ratings. IMDb’s rating system works on the aggregate votes received by registered users on the platform which includes both general viewers and critics.
Yaariyan 2 is a remake of a malayalam movie called Bangalore Days which came out in 2014. It feels like an ill performed rendition of the original and lacks a gripping factor. The pathetic remake yet again questions the longevity of remake culture in Bollywood. The film’s box office collection is evident of how bad the movie is. It has managed to earn only 2 crore at the box office in its early days but trust us, it is worse than that.
Even though Yaariyan 2 has a high number of votes, it has managed to receive an extremely high rating of 9 on the platform. It has led to speculations that the rating platform is being used to promote films by manipulating ratings. The concern seems completely valid when we see how internationally acclaimed films like Oppenheimer managed to score only 8.5. So the question is how much can you rely on IMDb for your movie ratings.
