OTT: Surprising Shift In Content Consumption

OTT Platforms Embrace Regional Languages

OTT platforms are booming across various regional languages in India. Currently, there are over 60 OTT platforms in the country, with 30 percent of them producing original content in regional languages. This figure is expected to rise to 50 percent by the end of this year.

The media and entertainment sector holds a substantial position in the Indian economy, contributing around Rs 2 lakh crore and growing at an impressive rate of 20 percent.

This growth trajectory is expected to continue as regional OTT platforms expand, offering more content with dubbing and subtitling. However, it’s worth noting that producing regional content can be costly, averaging around ₹20 crore or more for a regional original series.

Amazon miniTV recently launched over 200 shows and movies, including Hindi originals and Hollywood films, dubbed in Tamil and Telugu. They also plan to introduce Korean, Turkish, and Mandarin shows dubbed in Tamil and Telugu.

Hotstar is also making strides in the Southern Originals market with 20 specials and five original productions. Series like Save The Tigers, Mansion 24, and Vadhuvu in Telugu, KCF in Malayalam, and KKK and Label in Tamil, have led to increased subscriber retention and engagement.

Furthermore, collaborations with renowned personalities such as Jeethu Joseph, Vijay Sethupathi, Maari Selvaraj, Nivin Pauly, and others are driving the success of upcoming projects.

ZEE5 has also found success with regional language originals like Koose Munisamy Veerappan in Tamil, as well as Puli Meka in Telugu.

From an investment and revenue perspective, regional content is witnessing significant growth. There’s a consistent focus on expanding the regional content catalog and improving localization processes to meet the growing demand.
