“Squid Game” the famous Netflix sensation of 2021. This South Korean dystopian thriller series became a cultural phenomenon in no time, and is coming back with another season. But, there is a bit of a problem. The Squid Game star O Yeong-su who played the role of Oh II-nam was convicted on charges of sexual harassment, on Friday 2024.
The 79 years old star, was the first south korean actor who won Golden globe for best supporting role, but he has been sentenced to prison for 8 months. Furthermore, South Korean court instructed him to attend a 40 hr Sexual harassment treatment program.
O Yeong-su was charged on two counts of sexual harassment, one is on 2017, when it was reported that he forcefully hugged and kissed a woman when he went out on one of his theater shows and another one is in 2022 when he again sexual harassed a woman. Although, the identity of the woman is kept hidden.
The “Squid Game” series depicts a very dark area of society, where everyone, starting from people of higher strata to the very lower one all of them are competing against each other to win a very large amount of money. But, in the upcoming season 2 it is a very questionable topic that keeping O will be a good idea or not. Because, although the theme of the series is dark. But, keeping someone who is associated with violence will negativity impact the whole team. Although the creators of Squid Game haven’t said anything regarding this topic yet.
Multiple South korean actors and filmmakers are accused of sexual harassment and more over the South Korean industry is known as a merciless place to be in, which lead to suicide of many actors and actresses.
