Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s projects are one of a kind. We know that they’re going to be full of high drama and grandeur. The magnificent sets and powerful dialogues are the trademark elements of a Bhansali project. But what makes him great is the core emotions with which his stories are presented. When thinking about his movies like “Black” and “Guzarish”, it’s not just the grandness and larger-than-life presentation, but the heart of the movies is in the right place. And that’s why we love these movies so much.
When it was announced that he was going to make a Netflix series based on the stories of Heeramandi, the place known as the most famous red-light area in Lahore, set during the pre-partition era, Bhansali was going to present us with the struggles of sex workers during British rule. Everyone had high expectations for the project, as these are particular areas where Bhansali excels. We’ve seen it in movies like “Gangubai Kathiawadi” and even “Devdas”.
But upon the release of the show, it seems that “Heeramandi” has self-sabotaged itself with the huge pressure it had to be the greatest series from India. The series excels in its set designs, costumes, and other technical aspects. But is it enough for an SLB project that has been hyped so much? Definitely not.
The series is full of ugly issues that make it difficult to believe that it’s a Bhansali project. In one of the scenes, Sonakshi Sinha is seen reading a newspaper which has news related to the corona pandemic. Furthermore, the ladies of Heeramandi don’t wear the grand costumes which are being shown in the series. A Twitter user exposes the silly mistakes that have been shown everywhere in this series. Check out the thread below. It’s obvious the series couldn’t make the impact that has been created by other Bhansali projects. We can still hope for better things in “Love and War”, which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in lead roles. Do let us know your thoughts.
