Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par has got mixed reactions on social media following the release of its trailer on 13th May.
While many loved the emotional and warm tone, criticism started pouring in, especially about its similarity with the Spanish film Campeones and its English version Champions. Viewers called it a “frame-by-frame” remake and questioned the creativity and originality.
The comparisons didn’t stop there. Many on social media drew parallels between Sitaare Zameen Par and Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De! India, pointing out the underdog sports narrative and the inspirational coach trope.
This time basketball replaces hockey but the structure feels too familiar to some. Jokes were circulating online about how SRK would react to what some are calling a rehashed version of his classic.
Another criticism was that the trailer reveals too much of the story, leaving no suspense or curiosity about the final product. Viewers also felt Genelia Deshmukh’s role was underdeveloped, which is unusual for an Aamir Khan film where female leads are usually more prominent.
But some liked the fact that the film is about mentally challenged adults, a change from Taare Zameen Par which was about child disabilities. This was seen as a refreshing take.
Overall, the responses are divided. While many loved the film’s warmth and emotional depth, others felt it lacks originality. The trailer has certainly increased the anticipation and pressure for Aamir Khan’s much awaited comeback.
