Bollywood Sequel Wave: Hit Making Trick Or Lack Of Ideas?

In the current scene of Bollywood movies, we can notice an ongoing wave of sequels that has swept the box office. One after the other filmmakers are relying on the popularity of classic box office hits and monetising from their remakes.

Films like Gadar 2, Stree 2, Dream Girl 2, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, Singham Again and many more have been in news for coming to box office as sequels. Many of them have proven themselves as hits and many are high in speculations even before their release.

Makers are majorly exploiting the nostalgia or recall factor of superhit films. By bringing the same vibe back in their sequel they can again invest audiences easily who are attached to the film’s essence. Plus they don’t have to work a lot on developing the background, characterisation or settings.

While most of these films are loved by fans, it does not guarantee that the film will be a success. Filmmakers have misunderstood audiences’ preference for super hit films and started making half-boiled formulaic films that are not impressing them anymore.

Films like Border 2, Singham Again, Brahmastra 2 and Housefull 5 – must also understand that good storytelling and power packed performances are of equal importance with the recall factor. If they fail to keep up with fans’ expectations these projects can end up in utter failure as well.
