Did you know that when Shekhar Kapur’s 1983 classic Masoom was first released, theatres were nearly empty?

For the first few days, the film struggled to attract an audience. However, as word spread, it gradually gained popularity and went on to become a hit, eventually playing houseful theatres.

After 42 years, the filmmaker is making a sequel to the classic film- Masoom: The Next Generation, set in Mumbai. It will star a stellar ensemble of Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kaveri Kapur.

He plans to shoot the film on a start-to-finish schedule.

While not a direct continuation of the classic film, the sequel will also explore familial relationships, and delve into themes of relationships, memories and identities.

The shoot will begin in a few months after the songs for the film will be recorded.

In a recent interview, the director revealed that the film will have five songs, all composed by husband-wife duo Nirali Kartik and Kartik Shah’s band Maati Baani.

His aim is going to be to beat the songs which were in the original film. That sounds like a tough bar to reach.

Shekhar also talks about how he started writing this film a decade ago based on his life and his parents who wanted to build a house in Delhi.

In an era when Bollywood is ruining most sequels of films, this project seems promising mainly because of the way Shekhar Kapur is going about it.

The director is said to host workshops for all actors as it is a performance-oriented film.




With an amazing cast and an iconic director, the sequel to Masoom is definitely something to look out for.
