How do you bring a franchise known for graphic violence, strong language and an uncompromising tone from OTT to the big screen? According to director Gurmmeet Singh, the answer is simple. Mirzapur: The Film will stay true to the identity that made the franchise a massive success.
In an exclusive interaction, Gurmmeet Singh revealed that the makers are aiming for an Adults Only or ‘A’ certificate for the theatrical release. At the same time, he acknowledged that the CBFC will take the final call based on its content guidelines.
The director believes the theatrical landscape has changed in recent years. He said audiences are now more open to mature films made specifically for adults. He also cited films like Animal and Dhurandhar as examples of commercially successful adult-oriented cinema.
Since its debut on Prime Video in 2018, Mirzapur has become one of India’s most popular streaming franchises. The series has earned a loyal fan base through its crime-driven story, political conflicts, family rivalries and raw storytelling.
Turning that expansive world into a feature film was not an easy task. The makers had to condense a story that unfolded across multiple seasons into a single cinematic experience without losing its core appeal.
Gurmmeet Singh said the entire creative team actively participated in shaping the film. Producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani also played an important role by contributing their experience and creative vision throughout the project.
Mirzapur: The Film is scheduled to release in theatres on September 4, 2026. The film has also generated excitement with the addition of new and reworked characters played by Ravi Kishan and Jitendra Kumar.
