Ranbir as Lord Ram: Right Fit or Just Stardom?

Ramayana cast Ranbir Sai

The mega budget film Ramayana is currently under production, with its first part scheduled for release this Diwali. Producer Namit Malhotra recently revealed that the film’s budget stands at a massive 4000 Cr. The announcement has triggered widespread discussion across the industry.

One major question is whether audiences will accept Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi as Lord Ram and Maa Sita. Since the casting announcement, the film has faced constant trolling online. Many critics feel Ranbir appears too mature for the role and question his suitability.

Sai Pallavi has also received criticism, mainly due to her past political remarks. After behind the scenes pictures surfaced, some viewers said she does not match the traditional image of the character. Additionally, Ranbir has never acted in a period drama before, making the pairing seem unusual to some.

There is also a perception that the makers are banking on Ranbir’s popularity after the success of Animal. Some observers feel casting decisions were influenced by market value rather than suitability. Director Nitesh Tiwari, known for grounded storytelling, is handling a project of this scale for the first time.

In Hollywood, casting for major roles often involves long searches, as seen during the selection of Harry Potter. In India, star power frequently plays a key role in big projects. While established actors provide financial assurance, mismatched casting can lead to significant losses.

At present, much depends on the official trailer. A strong promotional cut could change public perception. Until then, audiences will wait to see how Ramayana shapes up on screen.
