Rana Daggubati’s Big Move: Dharma, YRF in Danger?

Rana Daggubati Spirit Media film lineup

Long before Rana Daggubati became a national sensation as Bhallaladeva in Baahubali, he had already entered the world of film production. In 2004, he produced the Telugu film Bommalata, which went on to win the National Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu.

The following year, he established his own company, Spirit Media, setting the stage for a new kind of storytelling. Rana made his acting debut with Leader (2010) in Telugu and Dum Maaro Dum (2011) in Hindi. But his 2015 role in Baahubali: The Beginning changed everything, turning him into a household name.

Post-Baahubali, Rana’s vision for production evolved. Traditional Indian studios were either giant corporate networks or legacy family houses. He imagined something different a collaborative, democratic setup where creative producers and emerging voices could co-create original stories and intellectual properties.

That vision became Spirit Media, a production company built around fresh talent and bold storytelling. Rana and his team first focused on building a strong creative foundation before greenlighting new projects.

Today, Spirit Media is working on an exciting slate of films. These include Kaantha with Dulquer Salmaan, Psych Siddhartha directed by Varun Reddy, Premante, a Telugu rom-com, and a Hindi adaptation of Last Man in Tower by Aravind Adiga, starring Manoj Bajpayee.

The Last Man in Tower project will mark Spirit Media’s first full-fledged Hindi film production. The company has also distributed acclaimed titles such as All We Imagine As Light and Sabar Bonda across India.

These moves are shaking up the film industry. Many now wonder could Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media challenge the stronghold of Bollywood powerhouses like Dharma Productions or YRF?

Rana’s approach is clear: bring together new filmmakers, nurture independent creators, and focus on originality. While Bollywood often repeats the same formulas, Spirit Media seems to be empowering voices that have long been unheard.

If Hindi cinema doesn’t open its doors to new ideas soon, Spirit Media might take the lead producing the stories Bollywood has overlooked and reshaping the creative landscape of Indian cinema.

Can Rana Daggubati truly become Bollywood’s biggest challenger? Only time will tell.
