The 18th BRICS Summit is being held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 under India’s chairship.

The summit has brought together leaders from BRICS member and partner countries, with discussions focused on cooperation, sustainability, innovation and global governance.

Shastri shared a picture of PM Modi planting a sapling alongside Putin and Xi Jinping at Bharat Mandapam.

Reacting to the image, the former India coach said he had never felt prouder as an Indian and described the moment as international diplomacy like never before. He also ended his post by asking people to Take a Bow for PM Modi.

The summit has also seen several important diplomatic engagements. PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from countries including South Africa, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Egypt, Burundi, Uganda and Nigeria.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has also been part of the summit, with South Africa remaining an important member of the BRICS grouping.

The BRICS leaders have also adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026, with PM Modi calling it a reflection of a grouping that is wider in reach and stronger in purpose.

Shastri has remained one of the most recognisable voices in Indian cricket after his playing career.

He represented India in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs before going on to work as a commentator and head coach of the Indian men’s team. But with this unusual post getting attention beyond cricket, what exactly made this BRICS moment special enough for Shastri to speak out?
