At an interview at Locarno Film Festival where King Khan has received a Lifetime Achievement Award, he stated something that has caught fans’ attention all over the social media. He stated that he never wished to demean women with his characters. Many of his characters like Devdas were taken out of proportion when he only wanted to show them as “spineless” and something that people “don’t look up to”.

This statement has been deemed controversial by many netizens. People are divided and a lot of online arguments have ensued. Some believe that portraying a negative character is also a part of an actor’s career. Shah Rukh has played a stalker in Darr, negative characters in Anjaam and Baazigar, he also endorses paan masala. All of these do not seem ethical to a lot of people and believe he is just being preachy without being true to his words. Others wish that he should be comfortable with the roles he played as an actor and there is no need to justify otherwise.

However, the Pathaan star was also supported by many who believed that he was only saying that his negative roles should not be glorified by the media and fans, they are nothing to be looked upto. Playing a character in a negative light is not wrong as all stories need to be told. Some may be cautionary tales while others might just be there for the sake of entertainment. It is the way it is presented that makes all the difference! Stars with fame like Shah Rukh can make a huge impact on the masses. Has he been ethical with what he endorses? That’s a whole other concern.
