The Hindi film industry is riding high on franchises. Familiar titles are bringing back audiences to the cinema and after the buzz around Kesari 2, hopes are pinned on Raid 2, Housefull 5 and Sitaare Zameen Par to keep the momentum going.
Now, two new sequels are brewing and they could be comeback vehicles for Vidya Balan and Kangana Ranaut.
Sujoy Ghosh has started scripting Kahaani 2 and Vidya will reprise her iconic role. Meanwhile, Vikas Bahl has cracked the script for Queen 2 and Kangana will be back as Rani.
Legal issues around the Queen title are being sorted but either way the project is moving forward with Kangana on board.
For Vidya, Kahaani 2 is a chance to get back to the box office after years of OTT releases but limited theatrical presence.
For Kangana, Queen 2 could be a much needed reset after a string of flops and controversies that have distanced her from the audience.
Today, it’s not enough to be a big name — audiences want stories they can believe in. Franchises provide familiarity but without emotional pull they fall flat.
Vidya and Kangana have the acting chops but the script and execution will decide if these sequels can really bring back their big screen magic.
