Christian Bale

Christian Bale is no stranger to physical transformations for his roles, but his next one might be his most drastic yet. The Oscar-winning actor will shave his head to play Frankenstein’s monster in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s untitled film for Warner Bros.

Bale revealed his upcoming makeover in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where he also praised his co-stars and director. “I’ll be working with the wonderful Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jessie Buckley and so many talented actors in the cast. I’ve got to get busy getting on the rack, breaking my bones and eating lots of fertilizer or something to try and grow,” he said.

The film, which was originally set up at Netflix before moving to Warner Bros., is expected to start shooting in the coming weeks. It will focus on Frankenstein’s pursuit of love in 1930s Chicago, where he meets a revived young woman, played by Buckley. The film also stars Annette Bening, Penelope Cruz and Peter Sarsgaard.

Bale, who has previously gained and lost weight, grown and shaved facial hair, and even learned to play the drums for his roles, is ready to take on another challenge. He said he asked the filmmakers to let him keep his hair until the groundbreaking of a foster care centre he supports, but they were eager to see his new look. “I said, ‘Just let me get through the groundbreaking and then I’ll be off to join you,'” he said.
