Obsession is yet another horror movie based on the “careful what you wish for” trope, with only a few minor changes here and there. In recent years, we have seen many movies where a supernatural object fulfills people’s wishes but also brings death and destruction into their lives.
This film follows that exact same pattern. It is about Bear, a lonely guy who works at a music store and has a crush on his coworker, Nikki. When he gets his hands on a supernatural object, he wishes for Nikki to love him, and the nightmare begins.
While the plot is nothing new, the gore and violence make it engaging to some extent. There is enough to enjoy for a younger audience that does not care much about logic or novelty, but for seasoned horror fans, the movie is barely passable due to its predictability and recycled tropes.
Moreover, the ending, despite being a bit tragic, leaves a lot to be desired.
Even by filmmaking standards, the film does not rise above the average mark. Many shots are poorly executed, and there is a constant use of a blurry background effect for no reason.
The film is already a surprise hit at the international box office, mainly due to the hype it has managed to generate on the internet, and not because it is something groundbreaking or unique.
