For Sankranthi last year we had a major clash in the form of Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu and Naayak. Both films had top stars competing with each other after what can be termed a long gap. The thing to remember here is that in a general sense these two films belonged to two different genres while one was a family entertainer, the other mass entertainer. It has always been the mass entertainer that won at the box office in the past barring very few occasions where a family entertainer did well.
However despite the genre different Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu had more hype and held its own in Andhra Pradesh even against a mass entertainer. What many overlook here is a simple fact that Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu was the first true blue multistarrer in decades in Telugu. This is what had given it a huge hype and edge at the box office in the initial rounds or during the festive season of Sankranthi in Andhra Pradesh. Simply put, it became the first choice of the families for the festival.
Unfortunately people seem to be expecting the same with the Sankranthi releases this year too which is pretty far away from the reality. While it’s the same top stars competing against each other the genres chosen by these stars this time doesn’t favour them. Among the two films, 1 Nenokkadine especially is the more risker one which fans and the trade among the competition fever seems to be missing.
Films of a thriller genre with a classier treatment have limited appeal to a broader set of mass audience. Even at their best the performance of a film in this genre is limited to certain pockets and has a upper limit unlike say a mass film or a family entertainer. Looking at the trailers it’s clear that while both are thrillers Yevadu seems to have an overall balance right in terms of getting the mass elements. 1 Nenokkadine on the other hand seems like a no holds barred Hollywood like thriller with no masala elements added for the masses. Hence it seems unfair to pit the two movies together and see a big fight of sorts like the past Sankranthi.
Well is what we think and fans of those respective stars might have a different perspective on the whole thing. We would surely like to know what you think and like you to share us your views on what we think is an unfair competition.
