Akhanda 2 Hindi: Shock to NBK & Boyapati

Akhanda 2 Hindi box office weekend update

Akhanda 2 had an average opening weekend at the box office. The film collected around Rs. 67 crore gross in India and about USD 1.10 million, roughly Rs. 10 crores, overseas. This took the worldwide weekend total to approximately Rs. 77 crores.

On the surface, these numbers look good for a Balakrishna film and rank among his better openings. However, expectations were much higher. This was not a regular NBK release but a sequel to Akhanda, which carried strong brand value after emerging as a major post pandemic blockbuster. Combined with the proven Balakrishna and Boyapati Srinu track record and the film’s high costs, the weekend figures have fallen short of trade expectations.

The biggest concern was the opening day, which should have been significantly stronger. While the film held reasonably well on Saturday despite mixed word of mouth, Sunday failed to show the expected growth. Collections were mostly flat or slightly lower than Saturday, except in parts of Andhra Pradesh.

The Hindi version has been the biggest disappointment. Even though the first Akhanda became popular on OTT in North India, Akhanda 2 failed to convert that reach into theatre footfalls. In its first three days, the Hindi version collected only about Rs. 40 lakhs, which is embarrassing. At this pace, the film may not even reach Rs. 1 crore gross in its lifetime in the Hindi market.

This is a massive blow because the makers clearly promoted Akhanda 2 as a pan-India film. Such weak numbers show that the Hindi audience didn’t care even one bit to watch the film in theaters. It also raises doubts about Balakrishna and Boyapati Sreenu’s ability to expand into the Hindi market in the future.

Recovery is now a serious concern. With theatrical rights valued at nearly Rs. 110 crore distributor share, recovery so far is right now under 50%. If weekday collections do not sustain, distributors could face heavy losses of more than 25-30%.
