Akkineni Akhil has made three films so far, and two of them have presented him golden opportunities to make a mark. The first was his debut and the second one is the latest release Mr Majnu.
In the case of the debut and the third attempt, the conditions have been similar. There was open ground, the trailers have been well received, and the audio was successful. Incidentally, they also had a common strong negative which is the heroine. The only thing needed being a good talk, and it would have set the ball rolling.
Akhil could be still excused as that was the first attempt and there was no clarity on the subject, and the actual output was terrible too. But, for Mr Majnu, the critical appreciation was decent, and the overall talk is also not on the same level. It was also coming on the back of a well-liked Hello. There is no notable commercial film for the next two to three weeks.
Despite all these factors favoring Mr Majnu, it has disappointed the trade and the fans. Sometimes one just fails to understand why a movie fares so poorly, it is the case with Mr Majnu. The general assumption we would like to make here is ‘out of sight is out of mind’ for the movie-going public. Akhil’s long absence and poor promotional build-up meant that people weren’t interested in the movie. Finally, the subject itself gave a limited appeal feeling which further dented its prospects.
Given the improvement Akhil has shown concerning the screen present, we hope he doesn’t waste too much time picking his upcoming projects and gets going soon. Hard work is all he needs to put right now; the success will most likely follow.
