Chennai Super Kings have named Zaheer Khan as their new head coach, with MS Dhoni playing a key role in his appointment after Stephen Fleming’s exit.
Zaheer Khan replaces Stephen Fleming, who stepped down after 18 years with the franchise. The former India pacer has signed a one year contract, with an option to extend it.
According to reports, Dhoni was given the responsibility of helping CSK find Fleming’s replacement.
He spoke to several candidates before suggesting Zaheer for the role. CSK management, including owner Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, then agreed that Zaheer was the right fit.
Zaheer has previous IPL experience with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants.
He worked with MI between 2018 and 2022 in different roles before becoming LSG’s mentor in 2024.
CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise wanted an Indian coach who would focus only on the IPL and have no coaching ties with other leagues. Zaheer’s experience and availability matched those requirements.
Zaheer was part of India’s 2011 World Cup winning squad and finished as one of the tournament’s leading wicket takers.
CSK also see his calm approach and experience in developing players as important qualities for the role.
His first major job will be to work on CSK’s squad plans ahead of the December mini auction.
The franchise has failed to reach the IPL playoffs in each of the last three seasons and will be looking to change that under its new coach.
Zaheer Khan will also have the chance to choose his support staff. Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are expected to continue, while CSK are still looking for an overseas coach, likely for the batting department.
Meanwhile, Dhoni’s own IPL future remains open. Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that, as things stand, Dhoni is available to play for CSK.
