Right from the beginning, there was no question of single-screen theatres taking the risk of screening ‘Kaala’ after the pro-Kannada activists’ stated that they will not allow the release of the Superstar’s film in Karnataka theatres.

So, they stayed away from the release fearing protests and damage. However, several malls in Karnataka decided otherwise and with police security screened ‘Kaala’ in the multiplexes. Though the pro-Kannada activists tried to stall the movie’s screening, they were arrested by the police and the multiplexes screened the movie on demand from Rajinikanth fans.
Fearing violent protests, single-screens tried to play safe. But, the theatre chains took a chance and instead of a clean whitewash, ‘Kaala‘ entertained at least a small section of Rajinikanth fans in Karnataka. However, the makers of the movie know that it is going to be their financial loss if they can’t release ‘Kaala’ in Karnataka.
