The long cherished dream of Indians living in Texas is going to be true. The authorities have given permission to install a life size bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi there in Thomas Jefferson Park, Irving, Texas. The statue will be 7-foot tall and 30 inch wide and is made in our own Andhra Pradesh. The statue will be installed on a 6-foot tall pedestal.
The statue will have a granite wall as a backdrop inscribed with Gandhi’s memorable words, as well as quotations from Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Albert Einstein, President Barack Obama and others.
The local Indo-American organizations recently conducted the ground breaking ceremony for ‘Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Plaza’. The project is going to cost USD 700,000 and so far USD 250,000 has been raised. The opening of the statue is planned for October 2nd, Gandhi Jayanthi. The organizers are planning to bring some family members of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to the event.
