An unfortunate situation has reportedly emerged around a major Telugu film. Despite being a big-budget project featuring a star hero, the film has allegedly not finalized its satellite deal yet. Industry circles suggest this is one of the key reasons why the makers continue to delay announcing a release date.
Officially, the explanation remains the same: VFX and graphics work are still in progress, and the team does not want to compromise on quality. However, trade sources believe there could be more to the story than just post-production delays.
According to the buzz, no OTT or satellite deal has been locked yet, as digital platforms and satellite channels are not offering the money the makers are expecting, creating a huge recovery problem for them. In today’s market, streaming rights contribute a huge portion of a film’s non-theatrical revenue. When a project carries a massive budget, every revenue stream becomes important in the overall recovery equation.
Inside reports suggest that the much-delayed project currently does not carry enough buzz even among fans despite featuring big stars. The makers are reportedly not confident that the theatrical box-office collections alone would be enough to make the film financially safe. That has made the non-theatrical business even more important.
They also face another major headache. If the film releases without an OTT deal in place, there is no guarantee that streaming platforms will offer better amount afterward. In fact, if the theatrical performance falls below expectations, the offers could drop further. As a result, the makers are believed to be cautious about locking a release date before securing a satisfactory streaming deal.
So, the makers are in no hurry to lock a release date until they secure a deal that matches their expectations. Rather than rushing the film to theatres, they appear willing to continue citing ongoing graphics work as the reason for delay while waiting for the right deal from digital platforms.
