Nelson Dilipkumar seems determined to make Jailer 2 bigger than its predecessor in every possible way.
After bringing together stars like Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar in Jailer, the sequel is now reportedly adding another major name to its growing list of cameos. According to a report by Variety India, Hrithik Roshan has been confirmed for a special appearance in the film and will shoot his portions later this month in Chennai. Shah Rukh Khan was reportedly approached for the role but declined at the last minute.
This would mark Hrithik’s first on-screen appearance alongside Rajinikanth since Bhagwaan Dada in 1986. Back then, Hrithik appeared as a child actor in a character connected to Rajinikanth. Nearly four decades later, the two stars are reportedly reuniting once again, this time as two of Indian cinema’s biggest names.
Sources suggest Hrithik’s role is not a blink-and-miss appearance. Instead, his character reportedly enters at a crucial point in the narrative and helps Rajinikanth’s character move the story forward. The makers are also said to be designing a completely new look for Hrithik, with multiple look tests planned before filming begins.
The bigger picture, however, is becoming increasingly clear.
Jailer 2 is no longer being positioned as just a Rajinikanth film. It is slowly evolving into a genuine pan-India event movie. With names like Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Vijay Sethupathi, Mithun Chakraborty, and now potentially Hrithik Roshan, the film is assembling star power from multiple industries.
That strategy worked brilliantly for the first film. The cameos created tremendous excitement and helped expand the film’s appeal beyond Tamil cinema. The sequel appears to be taking that formula and pushing it even further.
At the same time, there is also a word of caution.
Big cameos can generate hype, social media trends, and massive openings. However, they cannot replace storytelling. One reason Jailer became such a huge success was that Rajinikanth’s character remained the emotional and narrative center despite all the guest appearances. If Jailer 2 turns into a collection of star entries without a strong story holding everything together, the cameos alone will not save it. It could end up facing the same criticism that some other star-studded films have faced.
For now, though, the buzz is undeniable.
A Rajinikanth film featuring appearances from some of the biggest stars across Indian cinema was already an exciting proposition. Adding Hrithik Roshan to that mix only raises the stakes further. If the reports are accurate, Jailer 2 could end up becoming one of the most star-studded Indian films in recent times.
Seeing Rajinikanth and Hrithik Roshan share screen space again after nearly 40 years could become one of the film’s biggest crowd-pleasing moments.
