Hyderabad’s movie lovers finally have a massive reason to celebrate. Jyesth Narang, Executive Director of Asian Cinemas and son of noted producer, distributor, and exhibitor Suniel Narang, has officially announced the return of IMAX to Hyderabad after more than a decade.
Jyesth Narang wrote on X, “Really Happy to Announce This… IMAX IS COMING BACK TO HYDERABAD! Hyderabad, we finally got an IMAX back! It will be coming to AMB Classic Sudarshan!”
The official AMB Cinemas X handle also shared the exciting news, posting:
“MAX PICTURE
MAX SOUND
MAX IMMERSION
Introducing, IMAX
Coming soon only at AMB Classic Victory, Hyderabad.”
The announcement has generated euphoric excitement among cinema lovers across the Telugu states who have long been waiting for a genuine IMAX experience to return to the city.
For years, Prasads IMAX was considered the ultimate destination for movie lovers in Hyderabad. However, the theatre eventually lost its IMAX branding due to licensing and technical reasons. Many fans wished that a true IMAX screen would someday make a comeback.
That wish is now becoming a reality.
Asian Cinemas, which has consistently introduced premium exhibition technologies such as Dolby Cinema, is bringing IMAX to Hyderabad through AMB Classic Sudarshan. The iconic Sudarshan 70MM theatre at RTC X Roads is currently being redeveloped under the AMB Cinemas banner through a collaboration involving Asian Cinemas, Mahesh Babu, and hero Venkatesh associated with Suresh Productions.
Sudarshan has been associated with several legendary Telugu film releases over the decades and remains one of the most iconic theatre names in Hyderabad.
Interestingly, Mahesh Babu’s upcoming globe-trotting project with SS Rajamouli, currently referred to as Varanasi in industry circles, is reportedly being shot for IMAX presentation. If the film eventually releases on the new IMAX screen at AMB Classic Sudarshan, it could become a landmark moment for both the theatre and Mahesh Babu.
The biggest challenge, however, may be ticket pricing. IMAX involves substantial investment in installation, licensing, maintenance, and operations. Running such a premium format profitably may require pricing flexibility, something that has become a sensitive topic in the Telugu states in recent years.
For movie lovers, though, economics can wait for now.
The bigger story is that one of the world’s most celebrated theatrical formats is finally returning to Hyderabad. In a city that lives and breathes cinema, the comeback of IMAX is a moment worth celebrating.
