Shah Rukh Khan’s King has reportedly secured the biggest overseas distribution deal ever for an Indian film. As per trade reports, Phars Films has acquired the film’s international theatrical rights for Rs 175 crore. The deal was on a Minimum Guarantee (MG) basis, replacing Yash Raj Films as its overseas distributor.
The deal is significant because overseas distribution agreements for several recent Hindi films have largely followed a commission-based model. An MG arrangement, on the other hand, involves the distributor committing a fixed amount for the rights, taking on a greater financial risk in the process.
However, the size of the deal also brings considerable expectations. As per trade estimates, King may need to generate around $48–50 million in overseas gross collections to support the reported investment. This is an estimate based on the deal’s reported economics and is not an official break-even target.
For context, Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan each collected close to $49 million overseas, setting a strong benchmark for his international market. Whether King can reach a similar level will be closely watched by trade circles.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, King is scheduled to hit screens on December 24. With a record overseas deal reportedly in place, the film has already raised expectations in the international market. Its box-office performance will now be closely watched to see whether it can live up to the massive business surrounding it.
