Suriya’s long pending project Karuppu directed by RJ Balaji was finally released in theatres on May 15th and is receiving mixed responses from audiences and critics.
Despite the mixed reviews, Karuppu is performing exceptionally well at the box office. According to reports, the film has collected more than 70 crores in India alone on its first weekend and is performing well at the box office even on Monday. In the Book My Show ticket booking platform, Karuppu is trending with over 18K tickets being sold on this Monday mode. Also, the weekend collection of Karuppu is almost on par with Vijay’s Leo and Rajinikanth’s Jailer in Tamil Nadu.
Many trade experts predict that, if this trend continues, Karuppu has a huge opportunity to collect more than 150 crores at the box office in Tamil Nadu alone and would emerge as Suriya’s first film to achieve this massive feat.
Since there is no notable release in Kollywood for the next few weeks, Karuppu with its strong hold at the box office, has a solid opportunity to go on a rampage at the box office and even has the huge potential to become the highest-grossing film of the actor’s career.
After Singam 2 in 2013, Suriya did not have a theatrical hit film for 13 years and was almost on the verge of losing his market. In this case, it seems like Karuppu is turning out to be a saviour for Suriya and has helped the actor make a massive comeback.
Even though Karuppu experienced very low pre-release buzz, the release issues because of financial problems and the one-day delay in the release accelerated the much needed buzz for the film, as the whole Kollywood industry voiced their support for Suriya during the delay and it became the talk of the town.
Additionally, this huge success came at the right time for Suriya because the Kollywood industry is currently missing star power. Veterans like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan are in the retirement phase of their careers, whereas Vijay has quit his acting career and Ajith Kumar is now concentrating more on his racing career than acting.
Hence, if Suriya maintains the momentum he gained through the success of Karuppu, he has a solid chance to emerge as the next superstar of the Kollywood industry.
