Royal Challengers Bengaluru officially booked their place in the IPL 2026 playoffs after defeating Punjab Kings by 23 runs in Dharamsala.
With this win, RCB became the first team to qualify for the top four and also in top of the points table with 18 points.
For Punjab Kings, this was another disappointing match. The team has now lost six matches in a row, and their hopes of finishing in the top two are almost over. Even playoff qualification is looking very difficult now.
RCB looked in control from the start of the match. After losing the toss, the team posted a massive 222/3 in 20 overs with contributions from almost every batter.
Virat Kohli continued his consistent season with 58 runs from 37 balls. Devdutt Padikkal played another important knock of 45 runs from 25 balls. The pair once again built a strong partnership and kept the momentum with RCB.
Venkatesh Iyer completely changed the game in the death overs with an unbeaten 73 runs in just 40 balls. Tim David also finished strongly and helped RCB cross the 220 run mark.
RCB’s batting has looked dangerous throughout the season. Different players are stepping up in different matches, which is making them a very complete team this year.
Punjab Kings needed this win badly to stay in the race for a top two finish, but the team once again failed under pressure. Their batting collapsed early in the chase.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Priyansh Arya for 0 and Prabhsimran Singh for 2 inside the first few overs.
Captain Shreyas Iyer once again failed with the bat and scored only 1 run. Punjab Kings have now suffered six straight defeat and the pressure on the team has increased heavily.
This match was their big opportunity to stay alive strongly in the top two race, but the performance was disappointing.
Rasikh Salam delivered one of his best performances of the season for RCB. He picked up three important wickets, including the wicket of Shreyas Iyer and later the dangerous Shashank Singh.
Shashank tried hard to keep Punjab Kings in the chase with a quick 56 runs from 27 balls, while Marcus Stoinis and Cooper Connolly also got starts. But the target was too big and RCB bowlers kept control in the important moments.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar took two wickets, while Josh Hazlewood, Romario Shepherd and Suyash Sharma picked up one wicket each.
Punjab Kings are still mathematically alive, but qualification now looks very difficult.
After six consecutive defeats, the team has lost momentum at the most important stage of the tournament. Their playoff chances have dropped heavily, and the road ahead is now very tough.
On the other hand, RCB are looking like serious title contenders. The batting is strong and bowling attack is delivering regularly, and the team is dominating both home and away matches this season.
