The financial strain in the Telugu film industry is no longer a quiet, behind the scenes issue. It is now visibly affecting even top tier projects, and a recent development involving a Chiranjeevi film has underlined this reality in an uncomfortable way.
Chiranjeevi’s next film, tentatively titled Mega 158, is with director Bobby Kolli produced by KVN Productions. The film was planned with a high impact cameo in mind. The role was reportedly written as a pivotal appearance by a legendary star, something similar to Salman’s role in Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan.
For this special role, the makers approached Mohanlal, hoping he would agree to do it as a goodwill gesture. Given the long standing mutual respect between the two senior stars, and the fact that they have never shared screen space before, the team reportedly assumed the cameo would come without a fee.
Instead, they were in for a shock. According to Bollywood Hungama, Mohanlal is said to have quoted a remuneration of Rs. 30 crore for the cameo appearance. The figure reportedly caught the producers completely off guard. The idea was dropped almost immediately, and the team began exploring the option of a Telugu star who would be willing to step in without charging a fee.
Telugu producers today cannot afford to pay Rs. 30 crores even for a full-length leading role, let alone for a cameo appearance. The budgets have become extremely tight across the industry. Rising production costs, uncertain theatrical recoveries, and reduced OTT and satellite deals have pushed producers into survival mode.
Even collaborations that once seemed possible through goodwill and mutual respect are now being evaluated strictly through a financial lens.
