The trend of re-releases in Telugu cinema brings both advantages and headaches. While fans enjoy watching old hits and reliving memories in theaters with their friends, incidents of damaging theater screens in the name of fandom have been reported.
On the positive side, these re-releases are generating decent collections. However, a new problem is emerging.
These re-releases are significantly impacting the prospects of the latest small films with relatively new casts. Moviegoers are choosing re-releases over fresh releases featuring new faces.
This issue is currently a cause for worry for small film producers and is likely to escalate as more re-releases occur. Small films, in particular, announce their release dates without competing with big films, but they suffer greatly when a re-release takes place.
Unless the industry body Film Chamber intervenes and decides to prohibit re-releases from Friday to Sunday, there will be no respite for these small films.
