OG 2, Devara 2, Salaar 2: Only One Has Real Demand

Salaar 2 leads sequel demand race

The Telugu film industry is currently obsessed with sequels. Every successful film seems to be getting a second part, whether audiences are asking for it or not. But when one looks beyond social media hype and fan excitement, the actual commercial reality appears very different.

Take Pawan Kalyan’s They Call Him OG, for example.

Despite the tremendous hype surrounding Pawan Kalyan and Sujeeth’s film, OG ultimately failed to achieve breakeven in several territories. While the film received appreciation from fans and developed a loyal following, it was not an all-territory blockbuster. Because of that, trade experts believe OG 2 would not dramatically expand the franchise’s market. At best, the sequel might add another Rs. 10-20 crore to the first film’s overall box office numbers. That is hardly the kind of jump usually expected from a sequel.

Then there is Devara.

On paper, the film is a success story. It performed strongly in the Telugu states, and the Hindi version also delivered respectable numbers. Yet something feels missing. Despite the box office success, the film has not created genuine hunger for a sequel. Even among NTR fans, Devara 2 is not generating enough interest. Compare that with the excitement that surrounded Pushpa 2 immediately after the first film. The difference is obvious.

In fact, industry circles believe there is a genuine possibility that Devara 2 may never happen. Unlike franchises where audiences constantly demand the next chapter, Devara ended without creating that level of anticipation. Even the makers seem to understand the ground reality, so shelving the sequel cannot be ruled out.

That leaves Salaar.

Interestingly, Salaar did not emerge as a theatrical blockbuster despite its enormous expectations. The film missed breakeven in several areas and eventually settled as more of an above-average performer than an industry hit. However, the narrative changed completely after its OTT release.

The film found a much larger audience on streaming platforms. Its world-building, characters, and cliffhanger ending generated significant interest among viewers who may have skipped it in theatres. Over time, Salaar developed a stronger following.

Among all the major Telugu sequels currently under discussion, Salaar 2 appears to have the strongest organic demand. Audiences genuinely want to know what happens next in Khansaar, which is exactly what a sequel should achieve.

Even then, expectations need to remain realistic. While Salaar 2 will undoubtedly open huge and attract massive attention, the increasingly common Rs. 1000-crore predictions may still be tough to achieve. A sequel can generate interest, but crossing such historic milestones still requires exceptional content, strong word of mouth, and acceptance across multiple markets.

What this entire situation reveals is something very important. Not every successful film automatically deserves a sequel. More importantly, not every sequel automatically creates additional market value.

Right now, among OG 2, Devara 2, and Salaar 2, only one sequel appears to be driven by genuine audience curiosity rather than franchise momentum alone.

In today’s market, where audiences have become increasingly selective, that difference matters more than ever.
