Game Changer Daaku Maharaaj Sankranthiki Vasthunam

Usually, it is a very common practice for Tollywood to have multiple new theatrical films, every Sankranti season. Every year, we have at least 3 to 4 new films, arriving in theatres during the Sankranti festival season.

The same happened this year as well, considering the fact that Game Changer, Daaku Maharaj, and Sankranthiki Vasthunam released in theaters this festival season.

Going by the reviews, neither of these films have opened to largely positive reviews. They’ve all opened with either mixed or below par reviews.

Regardless of the reviews, a couple of these mentioned films might do well at the box office. This isn’t about the actual content of the film but instead the tenacity of the audience to flock theatres during the Sankranthi season, which is a rich tradition in the Telugu states.

What’s to be noted here is that it has been many years since Tollywood delivered a proper winning Sankranthi film. Every time, it is the case of the audience having to pick the better option amongst the set of films that release, rather than a film running entirely on its merit.

Probably the last proper Sankranthi film that rightly deserved box office success was Ala Vaikunthapurramulo. This film had good songs, good making values, and also the desired entertainment value.

There on, all the Sankranthi releases have mostly been farcical products that are making merry all thanks to the festival season.

It is time for Tollywood to change the precedent of making farcical products in the name of “our target audience are different”. Making cringe products and labelling them as Sankranthi films that are aimed at the family audience is a trend that must be stopped.

A few people appear to be of the implication that their films are working very well by attracting the Sankranthi audience and adding this success to their accounts. But they must note that these very same films will be outrightly rejected if not for the Sankranthi padding.

The effort must be on making quality cinema and entertaining the audience in true manner and not playing to the galleries and thinking they’ve cracked the Sankranthi code.
