The Bollywood industry is slowly coming back to life after the blockbuster success of Pathaan and decent earners like Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Zara Hatke Zara Bachke.
Especially the success of Zara Hatke Zara Bachke was crucial for the industry because it was the first success post-pandemic for that small slice-of-life type of film. It proved that there is still an audience for small-budget content-based movies if they are entertaining and coupled with great music.
In such a scenario, when the theater business is slowly standing up on its feet, Varun Dhawan and Jahnvi Kapoor‘s much-anticipated Bawaal has been sold to Prime Video for a direct-to-OTT release.
The film is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, who directed the biggest-grosser of Indian cinema, Dangal, which collected Rs. 2000 crores worldwide. His last film Chhichore, starring the late Sushant Singh Rajput, was also a super hit. There were a lot of expectations from his latest film Bawaal.
Reportedly, the film has been acquired by Prime Video for Rs. 200 crores. We don’t know if the offer was too tempting for the makers to sign the deal, if they didn’t believe in the content of the film, or if they felt the film’s content was more suitable for OTT than in theaters, but it is surely disappointing news that a Nitesh Tiwari film has gone directly to OTT.
Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor fans had pitched a lot of hope on Bawaal, expecting it to be a theatrical blockbuster like Tiwari’s last few movies. They are sorely disappointed by the makers’ decision to release it on OTT and are calling it a ‘senseless’ decision.
Bawaal is all set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video across 200 countries worldwide in July.
