Even with two more months remaining on the calendar, 2026 has already shaped up to be a historic year for the Kollywood industry. This year, Kollywood not only got its highest-grossing film of all time, but also an impressive succession of multiple content-oriented, medium-budget movies at the box office.
Until May, the Kollywood industry only survived on the success of medium-budget movies such as Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, With Love, Thaai Kizhavi and Youth. Even though all these medium-budget movies performed well, they only acted as saviors.
Once Suriya’s Karuppu emerged as the first successful biggie of this year, the Kollywood industry hit an explosive high gear. Especially in the second half of this year, starting with Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, Kollywood has witnessed both commercial successes and the success of good content-oriented films.
After the Jana Nayagan storm came Lokesh Kanagaraj’s debut film as a lead, DC, which collected more than 100 crores at the box office. Following DC, Suriya returned with his second release of this year Vishwanath and Sons, and it also emerged as a huge commercial success.
At the end of August, the Kollywood industry started to get its finest content-oriented films. Starting with Rishikanth’s debut film Modha Rathiri, Soori’s sea-based sports drama film Mandaadi, Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy and Vijay Sethupathi’s Baththa, all four of these films were unique, solid movies and more importantly, all of them emerged as successful ventures.
Even though Baththa and Dorothy didn’t perform the way expected, both ended up as profitable ventures. More importantly, both of these films are going to stay in the hearts of Kollywood audiences for a long time.
Finally came Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2. With a collection of more than 700 crores in just 13 days of its theatrical run, it has already emerged as the highest-grossing film of all time in the Kollywood industry. With the current trend, trade experts predict that it might complete its theatrical run with more than 800 crores.
With two more months remaining this year, it remains to be seen what the Kollywood industry has in store. With Suriya’s Scene and Dhanush’s Om already in the lineup for November, it seems like in the remaining two months as well, the Kollywood industry is ready to finish 2026 on an absolute high.
