There is this famous phrase in Telugu that goes like “Guruvuni Minchina Sishyudu” and this is perfectly applicable in the case of Tamil directors Shankar and Atlee.
For the unversed, Atlee was once an associate of Shankar and worked on several blockbusters in the past, including Robo and Shivaji. Later, Atlee became a director with Raja Rani and he now stands as the leading director in Tamil cinema.
Atlee last delivered Jawan which made over a 1000 crore globally and he is the first Tamil director to achieve this feat, despite the fact that he had to cast a Bollywood star like SRK.
In the case of Shankar, he is clearly struggling big time to deliver a hit. It has been a while since Shankar delivered a Shankar-grade cinema.
While sishya Atlee is at the peak of his prowess delivering blockbusters for the likes of Vijay and SRK, on the other hand, Shankar is struggling to maintain his grip in the film industry. At this rate, it shouldn’t be long before he becomes irrelevant.
Career wise, Shankar led a remarkable tenure and is arguably the best Tamil filmmaker of all time. His vision and execution were once unrivaled. His creative presentation while in form was unparalleled.
On the other hand, we have Atlee, who always faces copy-paste allegations but he regularly delivers winning films that are working at the box office. So going by the current form, it appears that sishyudu Atlee is superseding his guru Shankar.
