Hombale Films, which has created a brand for itself after the groundbreaking success of the KGF series and Kantara, is now entering Malayalam cinema with the film Dhoomam, directed by Lucia and U-Turn fame Pawan Kumar and starring Fahadh Faasil.
Despite delivering an all-time blockbuster film with Tovino Thomas’ 2018, the Malayalam industry is struggling as very few films have worked in the past few months. One big hit is not sufficient for the industry to survive and thrive.
Many single-screen theaters are getting shut down (including the famous Ragam Thrissur) due to the lack of theatrical business in the state. Hence the success of Dhooman becomes very important for the Mallu industry.
Initially planned as a pan-India release in multiple languages, including Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, Dhoomam will now release only in Malayalam nationwide. The decision to release the dubbed versions will depend on the film’s performance at the box office. This strategy is similar to Hombale Films’ approach with their previous film Kantara.
Apart from the brilliant Fahadh Faasil, Dhoomam features a plethora of talented actors from this generation, including Roshan Mathew, National Award winner Aparna Balamurali, Vineeth Kumar, and Achyuth Kumar.
Dhooman was originally intended to be a Kannada film titled C10H14N2 (the chemical formula of nicotine), but Pawan Kumar couldn’t convince actors or producers in Sandalwood. So it ended up being made in Malayalam as Dhoomam.
